One problem that homeowners could encounter throughout living in a home is the peeling of the drywall tape. Peeling drywall tape may result in vertical and horizontal cracks and seams to allow in moisture that can lead to dampness and other unpleasantries. The fix for peeling drywall tape should be left to the professionals. However, we will go over how to resolve this issue should you decide to attempt it yourself.
The treatment of minor tears in drywall tape requires reinforcement of the damaged tape. Re-enforce the tape by patching over the damaged tape prior to it becoming an issue that is more serious. This technique is suggested for tapes smaller than one foot.
Prior to applying joint compounds on the wall, apply a dry, clean cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Let drywall or paint chip chunks drop to the floor for future cleaning.
You can skip step 2 completely when you purchase ready-mix joint compounds. If you already have a powdered joint compound or wish to make your own, you must make it yourself; it is necessary to combine the mixture with water. Use an easy-setting joint compound, mixing it in a mud pan or any other small container. Mix the compound with water using the putty knife to apply patches on top of the tape.
Make use of the joint compound you bought or mixed, and use the knife to apply the joint compound on the area that is damaged. Apply the compound to the area that is damaged by about four to five inches in every direction that the tears are to stop the tape from breaking at a later time. Repeat the process two or three times to make sure that the compound is applied evenly and that a sufficient level of tension is put on the area.
Take a sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Use them to firmly sand the space which is covered by the joint compound. Be sure to go across the area until your patch has flushed with the walls. You can run your fingers over the wall. If you feel bumps, then you should continue the sanding.
It is suggested to use sandpaper with 120-grit. Fine-graded sandpaper offers smooth scratching and is great for painting.
Utilize a roller or paintbrush to apply the same color to the wall in the beginning. If you don't own the paint in the same shade, apply the same color. If the color does not align, think about repainting all the way around to match the color of the paint you used for the area. If the paint or mud appears to be bubbling, this signifies that the mud which was initially set has not completely dried. It is necessary to scrape off the wet compound. When the paint is dry, it is necessary to apply the paint and compound again. It is recommended to wait for 72 hours prior to applying the compound once more.
