We have hung, patched, primed, and finished a lot of drywall. This collection of tips will help you make your next project or repair with drywall easier.
While it is fine to repair small holes in walls with a patching compound, for larger repairs and deeper holes, it is best to use a joint material that reacts chemically. These compounds come in powder form and can be set up in 5 to 90 minutes. Mix the water, and the reaction begins. The compound will harden within the time specified. You can purchase the powder in a 5-lb package. The compound sets quickly and can be applied immediately. Setting-type compounds can be more difficult to sand than regular patches, so ensure you strike them flush with the surface before filling the hole. Setting-type compounds are available wherever you can buy drywall tape.
There is often a small ridge of old paint, drywall anchor, or picture hanger left after removing a nail or drywall anchor. This can be difficult to cover with patching material. Make a small dent in the hole and fill it with drywall. The handle of most good quality putty knives has a rounded, hard plastic or brass end that is perfect for creating the dent. You can also use the handle of a utility or screwdriver to make the dent. You can press the handle against the hole, twist it slightly, and then use pressure to damage the surface. If you are able to aim well, you can also use your denting tool as a hammer.
Stress cracks are often found around door and window openings. Framing movement causes cracks that are difficult to repair permanently. A spray-on crack repair can be a great way to extend the life of your repairs. Spray-on crack repair forms a flexible membrane that can be stretched and relaxed as the building changes.
Fill any cracks that are open with a patching compound. Follow the directions on the can to apply crack-repair spray. To complete the repair, let it dry completely and then cover it with paint. Crack-repair spray can be purchased at hardware stores, paint shops, or online.
Renting a lift is a great option if you need to drywall ceilings. The daily rental fee is well worth it and the easiest way to raise a ceiling without straining your back.
Drywall lifts are easy to fit in a midsize car because they can be broken down into three pieces. Once you have reassembled it, loosen the catch and turn it a few times to ensure it is working well. Lock the lift, then raise one end of the drywall sheet to the support hook. Lift the other end of your sheet and slide it onto the second hook. Slowly and gently lift the sheet. Any sudden or jerky handling could cause the front edge to come off the hook.
