Drywall screw pops are easy to fix. This task can be easily done by yourself. A small drywall knife (preferably a 6-inch drywall knife) and an electric screwdriver are all you will need to put two screws in each fastener.
How to fix drywall screws
Step 1: Secure loose drywall.
Two screws above and one below a screw pop. To properly fix drywall screw popping, you need to re-secure the sheet drywall to the stud. You can use a cordless screwdriver, drywall screw gun, or a drywall screw gun to install two screws above and below the fastener causing the problem. This will ensure that the surface does not move or pop any drywall mud. While you can use drywall nails when necessary, the actual problem is caused by the drywall fastener. It's best to use the safest method to fix it, which happens to be drywall screws.
Step 2: Fill the screw heads using drywall mud.
After you have made sure the surface is secured, fill these screw holes with drywall mud. Apply a thin layer of drywall compound using a 6-inch drywall knife. Pull the drywall knife tight across the surface to ensure that the majority of the mud is removed from the area around the fastener head.
What kind of mud should I use?
Any type of compound can be used. Professionals prefer quick setting drywall mortar for small areas. This is because it can be applied quickly and easily.
Step 3: Re-texture if necessary.
Retexturing is required if you plan to repair a textured wall. This is important to remember when filling the screws in the previous step. Texturing will be easier if you limit the amount of material applied to the screws.
Step 4: Smoothen the sand.
A light sanding will remove any tool marks. Be careful not to sand too hard and ruin the texture you have created. A light sanding can help ensure a consistent match with the surrounding area. In most cases, 150 grit sandpaper is acceptable.
Step 5: Paint
To make everything blend, you'll need to paint every wall when painting any type of drywall patch. Painting from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is a good way to eliminate any sheen inconsistencies. It will show up if you paint only the area that has been repaired. It might appear shinier than the surrounding area or duller.
